Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays still hope to track down the New York Yankees in the American League East and performing well in a four-game series this week would put them in a much better position. The Rays will try to knock one game off their deficit in the American League East when they visit the Yankees on Monday in the opener of the set.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (5-7, 4.70 ERA) vs. Yankees LH James Paxton (5-4, 4.01)

Snell spent the first half searching for his 2018 Cy Young form and found it only occasionally, recently emerging from a deep slump that included an appearance at Yankee Stadium on June 19 in which he allowed six runs in two-thirds of an inning. The 26-year-old was given eight days of rest surrounding the All-Star break and last faced New York at home on July 6, allowing one run in five innings without factoring in the decision. Snell is making his fifth start of the season against New York and went 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 17 total innings over the first four.

Paxton had his own struggles with consistency in the first half but was sharp at Tampa Bay on July 7, when he allowed two runs over six innings while striking out 11. The Canada native allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last six outings but was ripped for six runs in each of the other two turns. Paxton is better at home, where he owns a 3.26 ERA in eight starts while limiting opponents to a .217 batting average.

Rays are 1-4 in Snells last 5 starts with 8 or more days of rest and are 1-4 in Snells last 5 starts on grass. Yankees are 17-4 in their last 21 after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game and are 6-1 in Paxtons last 7 home starts. Rays are 2-8 in Snells last 10 road starts vs. Yankees.

Lay the price with the Yankees at home.

White Sox

The Chicago White Sox hoped to emerge from the All-Star break with enough of a push to remain factors in the American League wild-card race. Instead, the White Sox were swept over the weekend in Oakland and will have to hit the reset button when they begin a four-game series at the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

The White Sox, who are 8 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot, have won eight of the last 10 against the Royals and will try to stay in charge of the season series behind All-Star Lucas Giolito on Monday. He'll face a Kansas City lineup that produced eight runs - two on the 25th home run of the season by Jorge Soler - in a loss to Detroit on Sunday. Six Royals pitchers combined to allow 12 runs on 19 hits and the club will hope for some length out of Monday's starter Jakob Junis.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (11-3, 3.15 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jakob Junis (4-8, 5.33)

Giolito tossed a scoreless inning in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in Cleveland after entering the break on a sour note, giving up a season high-tying six runs in four innings of a loss to the Chicago Cubs. He has failed to get through six innings in four straight starts after lasting at least that long in his previous five outings. The former first-round pick, who turned 25 on Sunday, is 6-0 with a 2.13 ERA in 10 career outings against the Royals.

Junis is winless over his last seven starts, although he was solid in a no-decision at Washington on July 7. The Illinois native held the Nationals to two runs over seven innings while striking out six. He opened his season with a win over the White Sox at home and is 2-1 with a 5.34 ERA in five career meetings.

White Sox are 12-4 in their last 16 vs. American League Central and are 5-0 in Giolitos last 5 starts vs. American League Central. Royals are 1-5 in Junis' last 6 home starts. White Sox are 8-2 in Giolitos last 10 starts vs. Royals.

Play Chicago on the road.
